Author Bio

Geoffrey Philp is a poet, educator, and Garvey scholar whose work honors the intergenerational struggle for Black self-determination through education and cultural memory.

A faculty member at the Marcus Garvey Education Academy, Philp continues Garvey’s mission by grounding his teaching in the principles of mental clarity, purpose, and perseverance. His work equips students and readers with the tools to reclaim their history, think critically, and act in service of collective liberation.

Born in Jamaica and based in Miami, Philp has taught literature and creative writing for more than thirty years. His published work spans poetry, fiction, children’s literature, and essays that center the African diaspora. His books include Garvey’s Ghost, Marcus and the Amazons, My Name is Marcus, and A Love Song for My Beloved. His most recent publication, Unstoppable You: 50 Quotes by Marcus Garvey to Inspire Greatness, is a growth-mindset journal that transforms Garvey’s teachings into daily practices for youth navigating a world shaped by systemic forgetting.

Philp’s work has been recognized with the Silver Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica (2022), the Marcus Garvey Excellence Award (2022), and the Rootz Foundation Marcus Garvey Community Service Award (2023). His lifelong mission is to ensure that Marcus Garvey’s truths and the histories of the African diaspora remain central to any serious account of modernity and that they are upheld as pillars of knowledge and liberation.
