Becoming Marcus
A three-part interactive story series for Grades 7 to 9, built on the life and philosophy of Marcus Garvey.
Each part puts students inside a moment that shaped one of the most important figures in Pan-African history. Five voices tell each story. No single voice has the full picture. Students read them all, weigh them against each other, and decide what they believe. History has never felt like this.
Marcus Garvey was fourteen when the world tried to define him. He spent the rest of his life proving it wrong.
His parents had already given him something the world could not take. His mother’s voice was the foundation. When the moment came, he did not crumble. He did not run. He decided who he was going to be.
That decision became a movement.
In the age of AI, the child who knows who they are is the child who cannot be programmed. This is the story your child needs. The moment will not wait.

Becoming Marcus opens with Garvey’s first experience of racism. We begin the series here on purpose. Sooner or later, almost every Black child will meet some form of racial discrimination. It may come more quietly than it did for Garvey. It will still come. This lesson gives a child something to hold when it does: the power to define themselves before the world tries to define them.
A skill for the first encounter, and a skill for a lifetime.

Marcus Garvey is crossing the Atlantic. He has observed the conditions of Black workers in the Caribbean, South and Central America, Europe, and the UK, and asks a question he cannot stop asking: who speaks for our people? By the time he lands, he knows the answer. The Universal Negro Improvement Association is not yet born. But the idea is alive.
Marcus Garvey discovers his purpose, but not everyone agrees with his goals.

Marcus Garvey has built the largest Pan-African organization in history. Now the forces that want him gone are closing in. The Black Star Line is under investigation. The trial is coming. What happens next is not a simple story of justice or injustice. The people in that courtroom all believed they were right.

Ready for the Age of AI
The skill a machine cannot hand a child
A machine can now answer almost any question in seconds. That makes one ability matter more than ever: deciding what is true, and choosing who you become because of it. Becoming Marcus builds that ability directly. Students read one moment through five voices, weigh accounts that do not agree, and decide for themselves what to believe. That is the daily work of a mind that thinks for itself.
Three habits of mind carry a young person through the age of AI. This series trains all three.
Imagination
Seeing the possibility that is not on the page yet. Garvey imagined a future his world called impossible, and this lesson asks students to do the same.
Judgment
Deciding which answer is true, just, and worth keeping. AI produces good answers and bad ones together, and the reader has to tell them apart.
Agency
Carrying an idea from thought to action. A machine cannot build trust, persist through setbacks, or lead people. A person does that.
This is what The Garvey Classroom means by future-ready education. Not new tools laid over old habits of mind, but readers, writers, thinkers, builders, and leaders who can weigh what a machine hands them and decide for themselves what is true. It begins with the Power of the Mind.
Confidence is your birthright.
