Awakening to the Power of the Mind: Chapter One

Ready for the Age of AI

The skill a machine cannot hand a child

A machine can now answer almost any question in seconds. That makes one ability matter more than ever: deciding what is true, and choosing who you become because of it. Becoming Marcus builds it directly. Students read one moment through five voices, weigh accounts that do not agree, and decide for themselves what to believe.

Imagination

Seeing the possibility that is not on the page yet.

Judgment

Telling a true, worthwhile answer from a false one. AI hands us both.

Agency

Carrying an idea from thought to action. That work stays human.

This is what The Garvey Classroom means by future-ready education: readers, writers, thinkers, builders, and leaders who can weigh what a machine hands them and decide for themselves what is true. It begins with the Power of the Mind.

What this lesson opens with

Becoming Marcus opens with Garvey’s first experience of racism. We begin the series here on purpose. Sooner or later, almost every Black child will meet some form of racial discrimination. It may come more quietly than it did for Garvey. It will still come. This lesson gives a child something to hold when it does: the power to define themselves before the world tries to define them. A skill for the first encounter, and a skill for a lifetime.
